  1. Bhagat Singh was born on 27th September, 1907 in Banga, Pakistan to Sardar Kishan Singh Sandhu and Vidyavati.
  2. He received his primary education from the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic High School, an Arya Samaji institution.
  3. Bhagat Singh was inspired by Vladimir Lenin’s ideas of socialism and gained interest in it at a young age.
  4. He founded the Naujawan Bharat Sabha in March 1926. He also joined the Hindustan Republican Association, which had prominent leaders, such as Chandrashekhar Azad, Ram Prasad Bismil and Shahid Ashfaqallah Khan.
  5. Singh left home for Kanpur when his parents tried to get him married, saying that if he married in slave India, “my bride shall only be death”.
  6. He became disillusioned with Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and joined the Young Revolutionary Movement and began to advocate for the violent overthrow of the British Government in India.
  7. He along-with Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Central Assembly Hall in Delhi, and shouted “Inquilab Zindabad!”
  8. He was sentenced to be hanged on 24 March 1931, but it was brought forward by 11 hours to 23 March 1931 at 7:30 p.m.
  9. He was cremated on the banks of the river Sultlej by jail authorities. His well wishers later took out a procession with his ashes.
  10. Bhagat Singh was only 23 years old when he was hanged. His death inspired hundreds to take up the cause of the freedom movement.
