Ten fascinating facts about Sardar Vallabhai Patel

  1. Sardar Vallabhai Patel, popularly known as the “Iron Man of India”, was born on the 31st of October 1875, in Gujarat.
  2. Patel passed his high school in Gujarat and went to pursue a degree in law and travelled to England in 1910. He completed his law degree in 19013 from Inns of Court and came back to India to start his law practice in Godhra.
  3. In 1891 he married Zaverbai and the couple had two children. In 1909, Patel’s wife passed away in hospital after a surgical operation.
  4. Patel was a staunch opponent of the British government and its laws and therefore decided not to work for the British. Patel also played a key role in the freedom struggle rubbing shoulders with the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
  5. In 1917, Sardar Vallabhbhai was elected as the Secretary of the Gujarat Sabha, the Gujarat wing of the Indian National Congress.
  6. Patel is the first Home Minister of independent India and he implemented a ban on the RSS for their alleged role in Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and for acts of violence against the minority community.
  7. A lawyer and a political activist, Patel was a leading member of the Constituent Assembly of India and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was appointed on his recommendation.
  8. He was the key force in establishing the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service.
  9.  Patel is extremely close to Mahatma Gandhi. He suffered a major heart attack within two months of Gandhi’s death.
  10. Patel breathed his last in Mumbai on 15 December 1950.
